Robin Roberts(1-0) gave a fine effort for So Cal.  He was reached for 8 hits

and 2 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.  Neither team managed to score after the

4th inning. 

 

Billy Muffett recorded the save, his 1st.  Larry Jackson(0-1) was the losing

Peoria never recovered after So Cal took the lead in the top of the 2nd inning

as they scored 3 runs on 3 base hits.  The big moment was provided by Gus

Triandos who silenced the crowd when he clubbed a three-run home run (his 2nd

of the season).  Despite losing, Peoria out-hit So Cal 15 to 11. 

 

Don Newcombe(1-0) allowed 4 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the

victory. Billy Muffett earned his 2nd save.  Willard Nixon(0-1) was charged

with the loss.  He was knocked around by So Cal, allowing 10 hits and 4 walks

in 5 and 1/3 innings.

In a dramatic ending, the Peoria Chiefs staged a comeback win over the So Cal

Knights by the count of 4 to 3.

 

Peoria scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning with 2 runs

using 2 hits.  Ted Kluszewski led off and keyed the rally when he laced a

single.  Larry Jackson pinch ran, and was was safe on a stolen base after a

botched hit and run.  After an out was recorded, Don Hoak stepped in and he

ripped a base-knock which scored a run.  Hoak took second on the throw. 

After another out, Willie Mays came to the plate and was walked intentionally.

Peoria continued their aggressive style with another stolen base.  Billy

Muffett then was wild with a pitch making Peoria the winners and sending the

61,767 fans home happy.  Peoria had 8 hits for the night. 

 

The win went to Roy Face(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Muffett(0-1)

took the loss in relief.  He gave up 2 runs and 2 hits in 2/3 of an inning.

 

'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for you,' Mays noted.  'It was looking

pretty dim there for a while, but we just kept plugging away and it really

paid off in spades! And it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the

end!'

Center fielder Carl Furillo went yard and had 4 RBI as the Peoria Chiefs

defeated the So Cal Knights in 13 innings by the score of 6 to 3 at Ebbets

Field.

 

The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings.  Peoria won the game in the

13th inning.  Willie Mays led off and started the rally when he lined a

one-base hit.  After an out was recorded, Ted Kluszewski stepped in and he

drew a walk.  Furillo then belted a three-run homer (his 1st of the season).

So Cal was set down quietly in the bottom of the 13th.

Chiefs beat the So Cal Knights in 11 innings by the score of 7 to 5.

 

Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings.  Peoria won it in

the 11th inning.  Dark led off the inning for Peoria when he stroked a

one-base hit, and an error was also committed.  Charlie Maxwell stepped up

next and he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 1st of the

season).  So Cal could do no damage in the bottom of the 11th. 

 

The winning pitcher was Roy Face(3-0) who allowed no runs in 2 and 2/3
